How to choose a paper sack for flour and bulk products

Write a review

A paper sack may seem like simple packaging, but its design determines whether flour arrives intact, whether the product cakes in the warehouse, and how your goods look on a wholesaler's shelf. Let's break down the main parameters to consider when choosing.

1. Product weight and number of plies

Paper sacks are made from several plies of kraft paper—usually from 2 to 4. The heavier the weight and the harsher the shipping conditions, the more plies are needed.

  • 5–10 kg — usually 2 plies are sufficient.
  • 25 kg (flour, sugar, grains) — most often 2–3 plies.
  • 40–50 kg and dry construction mixes — 3–4 plies.

If the sacks are reloaded multiple times or transported over long distances on rough roads, it is better to add an extra ply: the price difference is small compared to losses from torn packaging.

2. Valve sack or open-mouth sack

Valve sacks are filled through a small valve in the corner using a packing machine and self-close under the product's pressure. This is fast, clean, and virtually dust-free—the choice for facilities with automated filling.

Open-mouth sacks are filled from the top, after which the mouth is stitched or glued shut. They are suitable if you pack manually or with semi-automatic equipment.

3. Product protection

Flour and grains "breathe", making paper a better fit than plastic film: the product is less prone to caking and does not get damp from condensation. For hygroscopic products that require extra moisture protection, discuss barrier ply options with the manufacturer.

4. Sack size

A sack that is too large shifts around and stacks poorly, while one that is too small is hard to fill and seal. The correct size is calculated based on the bulk density of the product: 25 kg of flour and 25 kg of sugar occupy different volumes. Specify the product and weight to the manufacturer—they will select the right size for it.

5. Printing and labeling

The sack must display the product name, weight, ingredients, date, and manufacturer details. A well-designed sack with your logo helps your product stand out in the market and at distributors. Make sure that small text remains legible after printing on kraft paper.

Short checklist before ordering

  • What is the product and what is the weight per sack?
  • How do you pack—automatically or manually?
  • How and how far do you transport the products?
  • What needs to be printed on the sack?
  • What monthly volume do you require?

With these answers, the manufacturer can quickly select the construction and provide an exact quote. qoplar.uz manufactures paper sacks starting from 1 000 units—send over your specifications, and we will prepare a calculation.
